Credibility as a writer might mean little when writing erotic fiction, especially if the writing is less-than-stellar. From AM New York: "Walter Mosley's latest book, 'Killing Johnny Fry: A Sexistential Novel,' was greeted by some of the worst, most hostile reviews of the writer's career." The article is discussing the Bad Sex in Fiction award, a dubious honor granted annually by the Literary Review.

The San Fransisco Bay Guardian has a fascinating piece by Justin Juul regarding the process of becoming an erotic fiction author: "The next night I smoked nervously in my car outside the Center for Sex and Culture. No doubt the room would be full of semiprofessional sex writers, I figured, dressed for action in lingerie or rubber suits. They would be so comfortable talking about pussies and cocks and masturbation and fucking that I, with my red face and sweaty palms, would look like a fidgety prude." Erotic art has periodically had moments of mainstream debate, from Mapplethorpe to Madonna, but now MSNBC ponders if erotic art has become mainstream. It's probably not just erotic art that's become mainstream, but erotic fiction as well.

Speaking of Madonna and erotic art, painter Peter Howson's latest work features the pop diva in the nude and is for sale for 15,000 pounds ($29,800 US).

Does Barnes & Noble carry erotic authors on their shelves? I've recently wandered around a few and noticed that they carry some 'name' authors, such as Zane, and those titles are shelved alongside mainstream fiction. And yet, when one saunters over to the 'anthologies' section, BAM! Erotic fiction everywhere. So, yes, Barnes & Noble carries erotica, but why no erotica section? Now, Borders has a section dedicated to erotica and so does their subsidiary, WaldenBooks. I'm curious as to whether this is a national shelving pattern or regional.

If you live in a western culture and you think writing and reading erotic fiction is difficult based on the prim attitudes, you might be surprised when you read about Muslim writer Mohja Kahf. Kahf's sexually charged fiction opens a lot of eyes about Muslim culture, but her observations are more than just posed from a cultural viewpoint. Kahf asks, "Can't you just call me freethinking?"
